I won’t criticize police for waiting 78 minutes before entering a Texas school where a young man with assault weapons was slaughtering children.
Frankly, I’m stunned that we even still have police.
We are, after all, the most heavily armed people in the history of human civilization.
Our politicians, propagandists and death merchants kept telling us that the very reason we must be the most heavily armed people in the history of human civilization is because the police can’t protect us.
So we are our own police.
Or rather, our own “well regulated” militia.
We 300 million strong. Who own 400 million guns.
We appointed ourselves the good guys with guns. We must protect ourselves from bad guys with guns.
Alas, some of us are also bad guys with guns. And sorting out the good guys with guns from the bad guys with guns almost always necessitates a body count.
Clearly those children died because their teachers were not good guys with guns.
Or maybe those children died because they were not good guys with guns.
Seriously, America. We’ve been asking the wrong question.
We’ve been asking if America can survive.
Guns, GOPs, extremists, polarization, systemic racism, Trump, the radical left (pick your favorite existential clear and present danger).
The right question?
Does America deserve to survive?
We who sacrifice our own children for our right to be the most heavily armed people in the history of human civilization.
